Converting the video format NEVER improves the quality! The only reason to convert is if you want to do something that’s impossible (or at least impractical) in the current format. An example would be DVD video disks which have to be recorded in DVD compliant MPEG-2. Even then you have to use the the right folder structure and file naming convention, provide navigation instructions and burn the disk in the right format. Fortunately there are DVD authoring programs which will do all that for you.

Some video formats have better quality, some not. Some formats compresse better the video, some not.The best format is the format that compresses a video(or whatever,a song,a picture)without affecting the quality of the video file. That means, less digital information without affecting the quality.Mostly, people convert videos because they need more free space,i mean after the convertion the video will need less space in the hdd or usb etc.For example, because of the slow internet upload speeds, some people compresse their videos(before uploading) choosing lower resolution(in pixel) than the original video. So,the video needs less information. Some devices dont recognize specific formats and this is another reason why people convert videos. For example, media players(mp3etc)recognize and play specific formats and another example is that many cd players dont recognize mp3 files compressed in a cd.Dvd players play only mpeg-2 files. Some dvd players can play also mpeg-4 files(divx).Of course there are other formats too but the most popular formats are these.I dont know if u can improve the quality of a video converting it to another format.I guess that u must uncompress a video to get better quality such audio files,i mean uncompressed audio files(PCM)have better quality than compressed audio files(mp3) and uncompressed pictures(TIFF)have also better quality than compressed pictures(jpg).I think that the video quality of a mpeg-2 file(dvd) is perfect,i wouldn’t uncompress it or converting it to another format…I hope i helped u…
